Event Details

The last time Kirk Watson was elected to be Austin’s mayor, the city looked much different from how it looks today. Which challenges would he say Austin has successfully overcome, and what is the city still working to solve?


Doors will open at 11:30 a.m. at the Tribune’s Studio 919, 919 Congress Ave., Sixth Floor, in Austin.

The hourlong conversation will begin at 12:00 p.m. Parking will not be provided. Street and garage parking as well as ride-sharing are recommended.


This in-person event will be simultaneously streamed for virtual attendees and will be available to watch on demand afterward at texastribune.org/events.

SPEAKER DETAILS

KIRK WATSON

Former State Senator and Former Mayor of Austin

Watson served as mayor of Austin from 1997-2001 and in the Texas Senate from 2007-20. He also served as the first dean of the University of Houston's Hobby School of Public Affairs. Watson has chaired both the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce and the Texas Advisory Board of Environmental Defense and received the president’s citation from The University of Texas at Austin.


Sewell Chan

Editor in Chief for The Texas Tribune

Chan joined The Texas Tribune as editor in chief in October 2021. Previously he was a deputy managing editor and then the editorial page editor at the Los Angeles Times, where he oversaw coverage that was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for editorial writing in 2021. Chan worked at The New York Times from 2004-18, as a metro reporter, Washington correspondent, deputy Op-Ed editor and international news editor. He began his career as a local reporter at The Washington Post in 2000.

HAROLD DUTTON

STATE REPRESENTATIVE

Dutton, D-Houston, has represented House District 142 since 1985. On Feb. 4, he was appointed chair of the House Public Education Committee by House Speaker Dade Phelan. Dutton is also a member of the Judiciary and Civil Jurisprudence Committee and serves as chair of the Texas Legislative Black Caucus.
